The product cycle trend

Many of us have grown up experiencing a new this or that every six months. We get a mouse or a keyboard and immediately after there is a new version waiting to be purchased. It appears that things are slowing down a bit for consumer tech. You all know of the examples but I will quickly review the main items that catch my eye.

The Playstation 3 from Sony was just released and Sony states that this device has a 10-year life cycle. The Playstation one and two only had a 3-5 year cycle and I cant fathom having one device for ten years. Does this mean theyll be upgrading it or will it just result in a 50-dollar price tag at the end of those 10 years? Another profound release is Windows Vista. This release will last for years! Windows xp has been in the wild for 6 years so maybe it isnt that difficult to imagine having an OS for 10 years but at the same time, I dont think Microsoft planned to have xp be their main OS income for as long as they did. Vista, formerly Longhorn was slated for a release in 2004 if my facts are correct and it was victim to major push backs and as of January of 2006, even Microsoft did not know that the next OS would be released to businesses that November.

One more example is Apple computers life cycles of its iPod and Mac OS. The iPod has going 12 months or more between refreshes these days and their major OS updates grow by 50% for every new release. 10 10.1 was a mere 6 months. 10.1 10.2 involved a full year. 10.2 10.3 was a year and 4 months and 10.3 - 10.4 was a year and half. Apple has greatly exceeded that for 10.5. Mac OS 10.4 Tiger was released April 29th of 2005 and their next version (leopard) is slated for release sometime in the first half of 2007, which could make this a full two years between releases.

I think the industry is slowing down and putting their efforts on taking care of their customer base and improving their current model the best they can. This philosophy not only saves them money in marketing, R&D; and product development but also helps their customer rating (as a company) grow as they resolve minor issues and release consistent updates. Also, by supporting one product for a full 10 years creates a user base and community that strengthens your brand recognition. Everyone wins and if you really want to enhance your product, this time frame gives you enough leeway to mod the hell out of it cause you can be sure a new and better one wont be coming in six months.

Obesity has been proved to be the cause of a plethora of diseases. That’s why today so much importance is given on weight loss and diet pills. Not only for the ill but even otherwise it is always good to have a proper physical frame.
