Tiger is one step closer to being Windows
Apple boasts, the more we add, the easier it gets and I agree when it comes to Spotlight but that is all I agree with. This is mainly a rant about how the Mac OS has moved closer to the Windows way of doing things when it comes to Applications. You windows switchers know of the Add/Remove programs control panel? In Apples next update, they need to add this because a big boast for Mac users was the ability to drag a downloaded app onto the HD to install it and move it to the trash to delete it. UNIX does things differently and Apple has made it so you have to do a lot more than that to completely uninstall an application.
I was made aware of this while migrating over to Tiger. I did a complete backup and clean install of the new OS but when I moved files over from my old OS Safari and iSync stopped working. I reinstalled again, now iSync was working and not Safari. The problem was occurring not when I moved my ~/library files over but when I moved the /Library files over. I became selective but I still cant get it to work. As of now, Safari is running but iSync wont. Having reinstalled 5 times, I am claiming defeat and wondering why Apple cant just put all required files in the application. If you copy the web kit` files from Panther to Tiger is messes up Mail, iChat and Safari so you have to be careful what you copy and I know better than moving some files, hell I have been at this since 8.6 but there needs to be steps taken to resolve this.
I never cared about the Add/ Remove programs panel and if Apple added this, that would be find but be honest when there is obviously hundreds of files that make Safari and iSync work and not everything is compiled into the app like the old days. Third party developers still do it right but Apple is monopolizing Safari where you have to delete the application if you dont want it to open when you click a URL saved in the dock or NetNewsWire. Lets try to resolve this next time.
