YouTube Mobile HATES Windows Mobile
I just wanted to give you a heads up that if you're running a Windows Mobile device, the new Youtube mobile site (http://m.youtube.com) will not work. You can browse, search and read the descpriptions of most videos but when it comes time to play them, i wish you luck.
It appears that YouTube mobile is not using flash but a variant of the h.264 codec. When you want to watch a video, it links you to an "rtsp://" link (commonly used for streaming Quicktime videos) and attempts to load a .3gp file which, on Windows Mobile, is not supported and gives an error. YouTube did the best they could by working on a codec that every handset maker uses but Windows mobile only supports variants of wmv so for now I'll just have to buy an iPhone or not have the joy of watching YouTube where ever I am.
Here's the walkthrough: (on my Mac)
1. Browsed to http://m.youtube.com
2. Clicked on a random video http://m.youtube.com/details?v=Cn278vo9nSc&s;=mmr&p;=1
3. Clicked "watch" which loaded quicktime and here's the link of the video. rtsp://rtsp.youtube.com/youtube/videos/Cn278vo9nSc/video.3gp
I could always just install this and download the videos to my SD card on my Treo, convert them then play but why the hell would I want to do that?
